Hello everyone! My name is Josh Higdon, I use they/them pronouns, and I am a first-year Ph.D. student in the Spanish and Portuguese Studies Department. I am a member of the Bilingual Sentence Processing Lab, directed by Dr. Jorge Valdés Kroff. In this group, we use eye tracking to investigate the social, linguistic, and cognitive factors that influence how bilinguals rapidly switch between languages within the same conversation or text. I want to investigate how grammatical gender impacts the processing of intrasentenial code-switching, and how inclusive language can be included in this line of investigation, using eye-tracking and possibly pupillometric methodologies to do so. I am passionate about investigating processing in both L2 Spanish speakers and heritage Spanish speakers. When I am not researching, I love to spend time exploring some of the local coffee shops close to campus!
