The Brain, Language, and Bilingualism Lab at UF is currently recruiting participants for online AND IN-PERSON studies!? ?

MINORITY LANGUAGE STUDY: Get started learning Finnish!

Finnish is spoken by approximately 1% of people in Europe and by 0.07% of people in the whole world. In this study, you will learn introductory Finnish words and vowels.

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Native English speaker with little knowledge of another language
  • You learned English at home and only speak English
  • Able to commit to 2 testing days in-a-row of two-hour sessions in-person
  • Between ages 18-30
  • Normal reading skills (no dyslexia/difficulty reading)
  • No history of stroke, neurological problems, or concussion

COMPENSATION: You will receive course credits for study completion.

Word Processing Study with Brain Imaging

This study is currently seeking three categories of participants: 1- monolingual English speakers with little/no knowledge of other languages, 2- native Chinese speakers with intermediate+ English skills, 3- native Turkish speakers with intermediate+ English skills. To qualify for the study, you must also be between 18-45 years old and have no prior history of neurological, learning or language related disorders.

During this session you will complete two word tests in English on a computer while we record the electrical activity of your brain! (painless and non-invasive method). Check with your instructor to see if participating in a research study can count for class credits, or you can receive 10$ as compensation.

Neural Oscillations and Sentence Processing Study

This study is currently seeking monolingual English speakers! This means people whose native language is English only and who have  little to no experience speaking, reading, or listening in an additional language. See the flyer below for additional details. If you qualify please contact Megan Nakamura at mnakamura@ufl.edu with the subject line ‘Oscillation Study’  to schedule your in-person participation session. During this session you will complete a reading task on a computer while we record your brainwaves using our ElectroeBilingual Codeswitchingncephalography (EEG) system. Check with your instructor to see if participating in a research study can count for class credits. Time per session ~ 2 hours (could count for 2 credits). There is no monetary compensation for this study.

Attentional Control and Language Study

Bilingual Speech Processing Study

This study is currently seeking Spanish-English bilingual heritage speakers, meaning speakers who learned both languages before the age of 12. To qualify for this study, participants must be between 18 and 35 years old and have no hearing, reading, speech-related, or vision problems (glasses are okay). During this one session of about 1.5 hours long, participants will be asked to describe pictures in Spanish and English and do a simple reaction test. Check with your instructor to see if participating in a study can count for class credits, or you can receive $10 as compensation.

Code Switch Study

We are investigating how Spanish-English bilinguals process different types of sentences and how it affects their performance on non linguistic tasks. In this study, you will hear sentences over headphones, answer questions and respond to very simple non-linguistic tasks on a computer screen. You will also complete a language background questionnaire and a word naming task
in Spanish and English. We are looking for Spanish-English bilinguals (became fluent in both languages before the age of 12; learned Spanish before or together with English); Participants should have no hearing- or language related disorders, and should be between 18 and 35
years old. The study is one session and will take less than 1.5 hours. You will be compensated for 1.5 hours in course credits or $10/hour for the study.

Grammatical Acceptability & Production in Jamaican Patois Speakers

Currently searching for 1) English monolinguals i.e. people who speak English only and 2) Speakers of English and Jamaican Patois i.e. bilingual speakers or heritage speakers who have been exposed to Patois through their parent(s). In this study, you will be completing two short tasks and a language history questionnaire. If you are a UF student, you may check with an instructor to see if they will allow you to earn extra credit for participating. Other than that, your participation will be completely voluntary.
